Safety razors are by far my favorite choice as an alternative to cartridge razors. They are solid in the hand and minimalistic to the eye, a perfect combination of form and function. While they may not save you as much money as using a straight razor, they will still save you a considerable amount of cash in addition to time and blood.
Merkur 1904 Classic Safety Razor
Price: $27
I had to throw the Merkur 1904 Classic into the mix due to its vintage look and feel. Merkur quality at this price point is unbeatable, making this my top DE safety razor pick for the man on a budget.
Edwin Jagger DE89L Safety Razor
Price: $35
Another classic is the Edwin Jagger DE89L, a long handled version of their DE89 safety razor. For guys with big hands or who want a longer handle to grip while shaving the DE89L is one fine razor.
Merkur 34C HD Safety Razor
Price: $43
First and foremost is the Merkur 34C. The 34C is known for its great value as a well-built yet affordable razor. This is the top-selling safety razor out there and for the price it’s the one I would suggest for an entry-level wet shaver.
Muhle R106 Black Handle Safety Razor
Price: $60
Black-handled safety razors have an undeniably classic vibe. The black on chrome of the Muhle R106 is quite elegant and would make a great addition to any collection. The clean lines distinguish it from other black-handled razors I’ve seen in this price range.
Merkur Futur Safety Razor
Price: $78
The Futur Safety Razor by Merkur is another one of my favorites. The Futur is also adjustable so guys with thicker facial hair may find this to be the best option out of the razors in this post. Its slick lines also make it a great bargain for gents looking to purchase a razor with a modern design. Check both the polished and satin versions.
PILS DE 101NE Safety Razor
Price: $240
Last but not least is the PILS safety razor. This double edge razor is a true work of modernism. For me, it’s the razor to own. It’s the one you show off. They have many options; satin, chrome or gold finish, satin and chrome finish, and finally a black-handled version. I don’t recommend this for first-time wet shavers. Instead get a Merkur or Edwin Jagger to see if wet shaving is right for you.
Shaving with a safety razor may not make you a better man, but it will make you look and feel like a better man. Don’t believe me? Just ask your gramps. If safety razors are not manly enough for you, check out this post on killer-looking straight razors.
Stay true to yourself. Be kind to others. Define your own style.
