Hoi An, Vietnam is a city well-known for it’s many tailors. I recently visited a friend in this beautiful city whose father happens to also be a tailor. While there I had a suit, sport coat and vest made for myself.
When going to a tailor in Hoi An, or anywhere in Vietnam for that matter I recommend bringing along a suit or blazer that fits you well so they have something to go off of. It is much easier for a tailor to see what you are talking about than simply hearing you say, “I want surgeon cuffs, buttons on the trousers for braces, and the jacket needs to be half-lined.” If you can’t take an example with you then bring lots of pictures. Clear communication is crucial to walking away a satisfied customer.
Leave yourself a day to shop around until you find a tailor who you feel comfortable with and who falls within your budget. Give them a few days to make the garments so they are not rushed and ask them to take their time to do it right. Then plan for a day or two for alterations after the fitting. Follow these rules and you will likely leave Hoi An a happy and more dapper gentleman.
